The Keystone

Temptation of Saar

All Saar feels is pain, burning, and torment. In the back of his mind he hears, “pray to Bahamut”… and he tries to, but the pain is too intense for him to form coherent thoughts, as the world mercifully goes black.

He awakens naked, shackled on a stone alter of sorts. Around him he can see nothing except a pale yet harsh light shining from above, brightening only a small circle around the alter. He breaths fire to see and notices a figure standing just outside the light. The figure, wrapped in a thin silk robe steps into the light. Anwen? She tells him that she loves him and that she missed him. She asks if he can trust her? He responds he has always trusted her. Anwen then asks what he would do to bring Io back. He tells her that he would do anything!

Good.

Anwen explains she has always wished only to help him achieve this goal of his and had spent many hours praying to Bahamut to know how. After years of nothing, she finally got a response, but not from the god she thought it was. She was guided by her goddess and instructed in ways that she could finally help bring to pass this dream. She had kept up the ruse that she was a paladin of Bahamut, but she knew that soon her beloved would be sure to see through that so she’d had to leave. While in the wilds she had grown closer to her goddess, increasing in knowledge and power. Then, to test her disciple, her goddess had asked her to bring balance to the world since Io is the balance between good and evil, light and darkness. A balance had to be restored and her faith tested. She was asked to kill Clan Tempest, a clan known for strictly following Bahamut.

Saar whispered Tiamat’s name under his breath as he realized the name of her goddess. Yes, Anwen served Tiamat, and it was she who unleashed the Rat-men on the clan that destroyed it, but she protected Saar and made sure that he’d been able to escape. Saar was almost crying as he begged to know how she could let him take the fall, to be dishonored for not protecting their clan. Her heart was in her throat as she admitted that she’d wanted to run to him, to protect him, but the Master Mahan had instructed her not to. She asked Saar whether his time after that had drawn him closer or farther from his god? Saar realized that in humility he had grown closer to Bahamut. Anwen admitted that this was how it was supposed to be.

She then told him that recently she had acquired a book from the House of Laban which explained a ritual for restoring Io to power. It described that a true follower of Bahamut and a true follower of Tiamat must become one on the night of the full moon when it falls on the spring equinox. She further explained that tonight they were both standing under the light of the full moon and it was indeed the spring equinox, so they had very little time for their bodies to join as one. Saar stared in shocked horror as he realized what she was asking. He told her that he’d always wanted to couple with her, but not like this… dishonorably. He stated that there must be another way. She asked if he’d found another way yet? No, well the full moon wouldn’t fall on the spring equinox for another 500 years, so there was no time to waste. Saar still didn’t want to copulate with her like this. Anwen admitted that she’d feared his honor would keep him from doing what he needed. She dropped her robe and climbed atop him naked. She leaned down and whispered that he should relax and try to enjoy this.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw movement and shouted a warning as a huge broadsword flashed in the moonlight. It descended through Anwen’s back and she twisted to the side at the last moment, allowing the sword to only pierce Saar’s lung instead of his heart like it had hers. “We had a deal,” she rasped as life fled her eyes. The only response was evil laughter from the Elf holding the sword. With her last breath, she told Saar that she loved him and that she’d done all of this… for… him.

Saar’s world came crashing down again. After believing that Anwen had been dead all of these years, and that he was to blame for the death of his clan, he’d finally learned the truth, only to realize that it was more shocking than he could ever have imagined! How could Bahamut let this happen? He’d been so faithful, enduring all of this with a light heart, and his house of cards came tumbling down. Cursing Bahamut and Tiamat’s names. Cursing the elf and even Anwen, despite his grief for her, he calls on the primal forces that flowed around him. His anger causing earthquakes and lighting to radiate from him as he roars in ultimate suffering for his tragic loss. Blue ripples across his golden scales as his skin turns to stone, protecting his pierced body and broken heart. The stony scales shatter the broadsword dumping it and Anwen’s dead body to the side of the altar as Saar gather’s his anger and lunges at the Elf, just barely missing as he moves nimbly out of the way. There is a commotion off to the side of the room, but the Dragonborn only has eyes for the Elf, who draws out a huge double-bladed axe. Finding his sword and shield nearby, Saar grabs them and lunges for the elf, lighting and thunder still rumbling around him, echoing his anger, pain, and grief.

Group 1

After being separated, the group on the ground floor of the hideout of the Secret Cabal of Cain began exploring hoping to find a way to locate their missing comrades. Raeya remembered the layout of the hideout better than she liked to remember from her time held captive here when she was younger. As the hallway they were in forked, she remembered that the left branch led to blood and suffering. The right branch led to an office, so they took that route.

The group found Dark Servants in the office and in the small room, they found it hard to fight melee fighters with their ranged attacks. Von stayed out of the room to keep the two bloodied women alive. Belyi Ogon actually chipped a tooth fighting one of the dark ones.

After killing off the Dark Servants, the ranged group on the first floor took time to look around the Office. Files on the desk and in the drawers detail the movements of Cult, hunting down bloodlines of Cain for blood rituals, especially among Elves. They detail those who have escaped (like Raeya Lamech) and their whereabouts. Upon learning this, Raeya began to freak out thinking that if the SCC were tracking her, then she had inadvertently put the whole group in danger. Cassia calmed her down and they moved on.

The hallway leads them to a Study. The group saw what they thought were servants putting books back on the shelves. Cassia wanted to attack, but Raeya argued that they could be innocents like she was. Von accidentally scraped the standard against the wall, drawing the attention of the women… who turned out to be Blademaster cabalists… who attacked.

After dispatching them, the group researches all of the information in this room. The books on the cases document the history of Cain and the lineage of his descendents. It is mentioned that Cain (or Qay’in in the old tongue) made secret agreements with Lucifer (now known as Tiamat) and became the first Master Mahan (Master of Secrets). It is later recorded that his descendant, Lamech also took on the title of Master Mahan.

Other paperwork indicates that the House of Laban ended up with the Records of Mahan, which detail the secret combinations of Cain. In the margins, it is noted that Sister Anwen would be acquiring them. Multiple documents on the desk are signed by Varis Qayin, Master Mahan… Von’s Uncle!

Group 2

The group of Dragonborn slid down a sloped, slippery tunnel and ended up in a heap of limbs at the bottom of it, any chance of stealth blown with the clattering of armor and weapons. As Ojitar, Saar, and Tatsuya extricated themselves, they found themselves at the door to a dining room. Some warriors had been having dinner, but when the intruders came crashing down the passage, they were armed and ready.

As the arrows began flying down the hall, they flattened themselves against the walls. They realized that their melee attacks would be of little use in such a large room against ranged fighters. The Barbarian and the Swordmage charged into the room, charging the warriors from the right and the left. Saar then charged up the middle, and knocked the center table onto the half-orc warrior leading the group. The other two Dragonborn charged smashed through the rest of the enemies and they all converged on the leader and killed him.

The group continued to explore, hoping to find a way to rejoin the rest of their group. They snuck up to the door in the western wall and peeked through. They found a well stocked kitchen with a couple of old scullery maids hard at work preparing food. After consulting, Tatsuya decided that he wanted to approach the maids and see if he could get some info from them. He quietly entered the room and approached one of the maids. He asked if she knew a way to the upper level or even where the leader of the cabal was. She looked at him funny, and then quickly transformed into a scary monster that looked like she was ready to bite off his face. Saar and Ojitar, seeing their comrade in trouble, rushed into the room and charged the doppelgangers, killing them to protect Tatsuya. With the shapechangers down, the three of them grab a bite to eat and inspect the rest of the kitchen, making sure that there is no other way out.

They returned to the dining room and took the norther doors. The hallway there, split, one hall leading to a room, another branching off to end at a dead end at a statue of Cain. Saar was about to head further down the final hall, when he bumped into the wall, his scale mail making a lot of noise. Tatsuya, who was standing near the laboratory heard things moving around inside in response to Saar’s noise.

Battle Standard of Healing Von Entryway to SCC Hideout Used by Wizard

After hours of searching, the group had finally found the secret entrance to the hideout of the Secret Cabal of Cain. The group quietly snuck in and found a long, winding hallway that had been carved out of the stone under the mountain. The hallway ended at stairs that led down into a semi-circular room. They hadn’t been quiet enough and they found that the entry room was very well guarded.

A short and slightly pudgy female mage plants a battle standard in the ground near her, and Von can feel power emanating from it. As the group steps into the room, they realize that the torches lighting it are behind them, making them prime targets as sneaks attack them from the shadows. The group splits up, taking down the wizard first and then the other guards with her. Von makes sure not to leave the staff behind and finds that it will enhance his healing.

As the group enters the hallway beyond, with Ojitar, Saar, and Tatsuya leading the way, suddenly the floor gives way beneath them, dumping the three heavy Dragonborn down a shaft. The other three, Cassia, Raeya, and Von aren’t heavy enough together to get the trap door to open for them. The group has now been split up…

((Mason will write the first part))

The next evening as the group was waking up and eating rations for “breakfast”, their guide sat down on a nearby rock and told them she would do her best to answer their questions. First off, she thanked them for following Cassia out of Lemrujase as their god had wanted them too. All of this was part of the One God’s plan. Saar stopped her there and asked her who this one god was? She explained that he was the only true God and in the old tongue, His name was Elohim. Von seemed a little offended at this and asked how she could make such a claim. The guide pointed out that he was a follower of Bahamut (Saar chimed in that he and Tatsuya were too), but that in the old language Bahamut was known as Jehovah, the son of God. Raeya was also getting offended and sarcastically asked if she meant to tell them that their gods were false? The guide explained that no, but they had been slightly misled this whole time. Ojitar said that it was convenient that she could just come along and tell them all of this, but there was no proof. The guide took a deep breath and then launched into her explanation. For many years now, the prophets have come to the Hebrews teaching them to turn from their wicked ways or else their city would be destroyed and they would be taken into captivity. This was the same God who had freed them from captivity in Egypt, led them safely across the Red Sea, and helped them to take and settle their promised land. These were the same people who were stoning and killing their prophets. Recently, a couple of prophets had been working very hard to preach these same things, but they were being ignored… and the destruction of Lemrujase was her proof that God’s warnings were coming true (See 2 Nephi 25:10, Omni 1:15). Saar remembered hearing a prophet by the name of Jeremiah preaching around the city, and the guide told him that there had been another who had recently left with his family as well by the name of Lehi (See 1 Nephi 1:4, 13).

The guide then pointed out that no one had ever asked Cassia why she was doing any of this? She told the group that both she and Cassia were part of an organization known as the Templars who work hard to uphold the edicts of God. What most of them didn’t know was that while Laban was slain and the Brass Plates stolen from his household, others had used this distraction to make off with other records. Cassia had been placed in the House of Laban to prevent this, but even she could not have foreseen the chaos of that night. A cult known as the Secret Cabal of Cain knew that the House of Laban was known as the “record keepers” of lore and history and they sent an operative into the house to steal the Secret Combinations of Cain, records detailing the evil secrets that Cain agreed to when he agreed to follow Lucifer, the Deceiver. With these secrets, the cult plans to spread darkness across the land, awakening the Secret Combinations of old. Ojitar asked why more people didn’t know about these records, maybe if more people knew, they could better fight against them. The guide took an exasperated breath and explained that the very nature of these records only lead men to corruption and evil deeds. The Natural Man could not be trusted with teachings so wicked. They would take root in the heart of man and spread wickedness and destruction faster than it could be rooted out. It would mean the end of everything good. The prophets also foretold that your group would somehow be able to stop the spreading of this darkness. Cassia seems to think that you all are too young and inexperienced, but I have faith that our leaders knew what they were talking about.

Cassia seemed to be in a hurry to move on before the mercenaries could track them and upon hearing the name of the Cabal who had imprisoned her for many years, Raeya was quick to join her. Something had been bothering Von this whole time, and he reached into his pouch and put on the ring that his beloved had given him. Looking her straight in the eye, he asked her if she recognized it? The guide couldn’t hold his gaze and quickly turned back to the rest of the group, if there are no more questions, we should ride hard to hunt down the Cabal’s secret hideout in the Hebron Mountains before they can follow through with their plans. But Von wouldn’t stop staring at her. Raeya interjected that she wanted to go and wanted to go now, but Saar counseled her against this road of vengeance. She told him that she had vowed long ago that if she ever found the Cult again, she would see them all hang by their own intestines, mounted her horse and rode out of camp. Cassia was quick to follow. Von wouldn’t stop staring at their guide as she too mounted up. Finally, she looked at him and whispered that yes, she remembered the ring, but this was not the time or the place. Her duty came before her personal feelings and he would just have to respect that.

((Mason can then finish the rest of this.))

Circlet of Second Chances Cassia Sewer Section 1 In rat’s nest

After landing in the sewers Cassia notices some light filtering in from the grate and insists that they close it so no one can follow them. As they walk through the sewers Ojitar picks up a dead rat. Chuckling to himself he tiptoes up behind Saar, who with his training in stealth, rolls his eyes and turns to look at Ojitar and remind him that stealth isn’t his specialty, only to see a rat in his face! He roars in fear and anger and strikes out at Ojitar with a fist. Ojitar laughs and shakes it off then scampers away further into the sewers so as to avoid further punishment for his prank. Raeya sighs and exclaims she never gets lost and the others agree with her, so she says she’s the best candidate to go after him. She chases after him and the rest of the group waits… and waits, and waits. Finally they decide to continue to walk through the sewers, hoping the other two will catch up. Everyone, especially Cassia tries to calm the panicking Saar who’s finding rats in every shadow (even his own tee hee).

As the group continues through the sewers, following Cassia’s directions, they all begin to wonder why Raeya and Ojitar haven’t caught up. In the darkness, left with their own thoughts, the group each comes up with their own explanations. Tatsuya imagines Oji sneaking up on the Ranger to play the same prank. Saar fears that Oji might somehow be molesting his protege. Von imagines Oji trying to get “fresh” with Raeya and her smacking him good. Cassia imagines all of the things one can do in the dark (Insert evil laughter here).

When Ojitar and Raeya disappear into the sewers together imaginations run rampant.

Finally, the small tunnels open up into a larger room, and the group is attacked by rats and some Kobolds. Since Tatsuya knows that Kobolds revere dragons, and he has served a dragon, he decides to speak to the small lizard-men. He tells them they’re on the same side and asks if they can pass. The Kobold asks for gold, so Tatsuya gives him a little and the small lizard and his companions leave. The group only has to fight off the rats.

Stanching Armor Ojitar Near Pool of Siloam Found on body of Butcher
Gloaming Shroud Raeya Near Pool of Siloam Found on body of Butcher

Tatsuya strides forward to one of the thugs and stabs his sword into the air, chanting and causing fire to envelope his blade. Then he spins his sword so fast it blurs and swings it into the side of the thug cutting him down where he stands. One of the thugs next to Cassia swings at Cassia, but it scrapes off her armor as she dodges it. Then the thug next to Saar attacks him but Saar is too swift for him and evades the attack. Cassia attacks a thug near Tatsuya and Saar with a thought bomb and hurts the two as well causing them to be wary of her. A watchman slugged Raeya in the face causing her to stumble backwards and and her nose started bleeding. Ojitar hacks down at his foe, but the man catches his axe on his sheild protecting himself from the Ojitar. Ogon Pounces at the thug who is advancing on Raeya and takes a large bite out of the man’s calf. Von looks over to Saar and sees him limping and whispers a prayer to Bahamut causing a beacon of light to fall onto Saar healing him. Tatsuya grabs a foe and pulls him close with his magical power and charges his sword with electric power and bringing it down onto the thugs shoulder effectively jolting him. Cassia stares at them with disbelief now as they continue to fight not understanding why they don’t flee, and calls upon them to run before it’s too late! Ojitar spins his greataxe overhead and smashes it into The final thug’s head defeating him. They cheer (except Cassia who has grabbed a potion from a persons side and is now urging them to run) and Ojitar takes his time gathering weapons and armor.

As they turned to run they look behind them, except Raeya, has yet to discover that the towering mercenary chasing them, easily catching up to them, is Krayd the Butcher. Ojitar takes a deep breath and sprays acid all over Krayd who screams in pain more than anger. Then he backs off to make more room to fight Krayd. Krayd bounds up to Tatsuya with three short strides and kicks at him which Tatsuya dodges, but too late Tatsuya sees it’s a diversion as the beast brings his greataxe down on his head knocking him unconcious! Saar runs to closer to Cassia and shouts for the potion which she tosses to him, and then he rushes back to Raeya giving the potion to her. She then administers the potion to the poor Tatsuya. She turns and marks Krayd and then attacks him using Guardian Arrow challenging him to dare make a move against someone else. Cassia puts her hands to her temples and begins chanting under her breath and Krayd Gets hit by some invisible force. He suddenly clutches his head and moans “Get out of my head witch!! Take those rainbows and unicorns and leave!” Von throws his healing magic over Tatsuya bringing his health back up. Then he casts a magic net over Krayd, Saar and Raeya healing his two allies and weakening the attacks of Krayd. Ojitar tries to jump into the back of the cart, but acrobatics is not his strong point and he trips and lands on his face. Then he stands, brushing himself off, as though he meant to do it. Krayd steps between Saar and Tatsuya and spins in a circle, hitting each of us with his axe. Raeya growls in anger and shoots an arrow at him but misses. Tatsuya begins swinging hs sword around in a fabulous display of his swordsmanship and then while Krayd is distracted by the psychic power he stabs Krayd in the gut. Then he pulls away. Saar smashes his sword into him repetitively and rushes off. Raeya pulls another arrow to her drawstring and embeds an arrow into Krayds shoulder. Cassia’s thought bomb goes off again and hits just Krayd this time, and then sends a cascading strike into his head missing him with the first but hitting him with the next.

As Krayd lays on the ground dying, he laughs telling the “rats to run, because there are 5 more mercenaries just like him hunting them.” Then, with a gurgle, he dies. Cassia gives the group a look as it so say “I told you so.” Raeya picks up on the hint and suggests that they escape through the sewers. The fighter, feels fear from his past creeping up, refuses to enter the sewer where there might be rats. The psion rolls her eyes and then gives Saar a mental push, knocking him into the sewers, head first. Raeya giggles and flips down into the sewers, with the utmost grace.

ITEM RECIPIENT LOCATION FOUND NOTES

Most decent people in Lemrujase had already gone to bed for the night and the lamplighters had long ago passed to light the candles, but still you quickly made your way home, wary of the shadows falling short of the lamps. On your way home there is no one on the street, except for those who only conducted their business by the light of the moon. It was therefore a shock when, at the far end of the narrow back street, a very drunk man stumbled around the corner, staggering to keep his feet under him. Even in the dim lights you could easily tell by his rich dress that it was Governor Laban, another of the politicians for whom the words untrustworthy, backstabbing, and dishonest seemed to fall short of his true nature. He had no problems bleeding the poor for every last penny, doing whatever was necessary for him to stay in power, and to crush all of the little people beneath him. You can almost feel a sneer coming to your face as you watch him stumble and then pitch forward in the small street, lying in his vomit. Shaking your head, you take a few steps to continue on your way, when a man of tall and broad stature turns the corner at the far end of the street. Cautiously, you step into the shadows to keep from being noticed. The man immediately sees the governor lying unconscious in the street and seems as shocked as you were to find him there. The large man gets a far-away look in his eyes like he’s hearing something that you can’t. He shakes his head as if struggling internally, again staring into space just above the passed out man. His brow furrows deeply and his eyes take on a pained look, his shoulders sagging as he seems to have lost whatever argument he was having. Looking around to make sure that no one is around; he kneels next to the drunken man and draws out his sword. The sword of Laban is of exquisite quality, inlaid with jewels and gold. He takes the briefest of moments to admire the blade before gingerly reaching down to grasp the governor’s hair. His breathing increases as if he’s frightened of what he must do, his eyes look panicked. Then, with a silent growl, before he can talk himself out of it, he pulls back Laban’s head and chops it off with the sharp sword. He drops the head to the side, disgusted at himself and then begins to disrobe the body.

You can’t believe what you have just witnessed. You can understand why no one likes the pompous governor, but no one had ever dared to try and kill the man. Frightened that the large man might come after you next, you quietly and quickly leave the area, disturbed by what you’ve just witnessed. Internally you argue that you should hurry and inform the authorities, but if you do, there will be too many questions that you just don’t want to answer. You decide that none of this is your business. You’re tired, and the only thing you can think of is your bed, hoping that sleep will blunt the scene from your mind.

The next day the city is in an uproar over the death and subsequent robbery of Governor Laban. As well, one of his servants is missing and blame is being pinned on him for this heinous crime. You hold your tongue, trying not to get caught up in the conversations around you. Rumors abound of what happened, but you know that once the sensationalism wears off, this new scandal will be yesterday’s news.

A month goes by, but instead of the furor dying down, it only seems to be fanned by the family of Laban, who demand justice. They are investigating his murder in earnest, wondering how someone could have impersonated the governor, snuck into his house, and taken off with the sacred manuscript, which was of great value due to the brass the plates were inscribed on. The family is desperate to find any clues leading to the capture of anyone associated with the murder. They have no problems stooping to bribery, threats, and blackmail to find out what they need. You have never mentioned that you’d seen anything to anyone, but somehow you feel that you’re being closely watched. You wonder if they somehow suspect you and are following you, hoping that you’ll trip up?

_______________________

As the sun was setting, a woman in black approached Saar, Tatsuya and Ojitar, all dragonborn, former guards to Laban. She spoke to them in hushed tones pleading with them to come to the pool of Siloam, in the Lower City of Lemrujase informing them of the danger of their own lives. The three talked amongst themselves and promised to only if they were allowed to bring their weapons, confident that they could survive an attack against their lives. She encourages them to bring their weapons

Then the woman appeared again, later, to an elven cleric named Von. She pleads with him to meet her that night. With his high level insight Von can tell she’s telling the truth without a check so he agrees readily.

She then appears to Raeya, the ranger and her white wolf. The ranger is distrusting and makes an insight check. Discovering she is telling the truth she reluctantly agrees to come but only with threats.

The people meet at the pool of Siloam and Saar greets his friends Raeya and Von, whole-heartedly lifting the female with ease off the ground as she affectionately calls him “dragonface” and then clapping the elf so hard on the back that he falls to the ground. He explains in simple terms to Tatsuya who they are.

The woman in black appears again and, casting away her hood reveals herself to be a githzerai and names herself Cassia. She then alerts them to the danger approaching. Someone knows they saw Laban’s death!! They draw their weapons and head into the fray. Tatsuya starts the defense by marking a foe inviting him to fight then slashing at another. The thugs attack Cassia and trap her in a corner and also Von! Tatsuya teleports next to Von and cleaves open the man’s head effectively killing him! Saar moves forward to protect Ojitar and Cassia and smacks someone in the head so hard he falls to his knees with a bloodied nose. Cassia then attacks the thug attacking Von from afar and cleanly dispatches him. The watchmen, there with the thugs move in on Raeya who dodges them narrowly. The watchman who fell to his knees at Saar’s hand stands up and strikes him putting a shallow gash in his side. The other watchman attacks Ojitar and hits him with a deeper wound. Ojitar lunges with a recuperating strike, beating him over and over in the skull and the man drops to the ground dead and the victory fills him with strength. Turning he runs away from the other man whom hits him in the back. Raeya marks her enemy to begin the hunt, and slashes the other watchman with her sword slaying him. Then she takes a step back from her enemy. Von rushes to help Cassia and fires the Lance of Faith and the thug narrowly dodges it.
